UNUSUAL BEACH OF THE WORLD – ELAFONISI

This beach is famous for its clean white and pink sand. In combination with a shallow transparent sea, a picture of a paradise landscape is created. The pink shade of the sand is the result of a splash of crushed seashells. Elafonisi Beach receives the famous Blue Flag award every year. It is an international award, presented annually since 1987 for beaches and marinas where the water meets high quality standards and is suitable for safe bathing. The Blue Flag nomination is administered by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a non-profit, non-governmental organization. Due to the shallow depth, there are no storms on the pink beach. Winds intensify here only closer to mid-November. The rest of the time, the beach is ideal for a quiet and safe holiday, including with children. It is considered a nature reserve, on the territory of which about 100 plant species grow. Here you can find rare daffodils, endemic species of juniper, sea pancracy, white hound, quinoa, etc. Among the fauna: green toads and rare Cretan lizards. In addition, the island is a breeding ground for turtles. According to local fishermen, monk seals are found in the coastal waters.
